The ASPS has this week posted on Revver a slick, well-produced three-part video that promotes breast augmentation. The onscreen tag line is, "A real patient talks about her real breast surgery to help you make an informed decision and safely achieve a satisfied outcome."

NOTES surgery -- a step backward?

Rob Oliver, Jr, MD, over at the Plastic Surgery 101 blog, is one of several pundits who have come out against the idea of Natural Orifice Transluminal Endoscopic Surgery (NOTES). This is the "scarless" surgical approach that has started to show up in the U.S. but originated in Europe.

In Wikipedia, NOTES is described as "an experimental surgical technique whereby "scarless" abdominal operations can be performed with an endoscope passed through a natural orifice (mouth, urethra, anus, etc., then through an internal incision in the stomach, vagina, bladder, or colon, thus avoiding any external incisions or scars."

Newsweek gets it wrong re: Botox

Newsweek on Monday published A New Reason to Frown, which reported on the flap over a recent Botox study from Italian researchers. In the study, scientists found that some botulinum neurotoxin type A that was injected in lab rats migrated into the brain steams of some of those animals.

The study's authors were careful in stating the results were inconclusive and required additional study. Well, the mainstream media (MSM) took it as a warning to humans who use Botox injections for cosmetic purposes. 

Newsweek opted to follow the lead of most of the MSM, producing a story that relies heavily on scare tactics and inflammatory verbiage, as opposed to balanced reporting.
